The law is very strict with regard to tyre condition and the penalty for driving with illegal tyres is high; both in financial terms and in penalty points.
Fortnightly Tyre Check Routine
- Check your tyre pressures - wait until your tyres are cold first
- Check the tread depth - the minimum legal requirement is 1.6mm. However, you should be aware that, stopping distances in the wet are significantly increased once the tread depth is less than 3mm. This is even more noticeable for cars with larger wheels and wider tyres
- Check your tyres for damage - such as cuts, cracks or bulges as these can lead to slow punctures and blowouts
- Check your spare - don’t forget to make the same checks for your spare tyre too!
Remember, only a small area of your tyre is touching the road at any one moment - and that, is the only thing keeping your car in contact with the road! It therefore goes without saying that driving with worn tyres could easily cause you to lose control of your vehicle with devastating consequences.
